Cafés & Bakeries

Cafés et Boulangeries/Pâtisseries

Salut!

Hey y’all & happy Friday! If any of you follow me on Instagram, you know how much I love food (especially “photogenic” food). On top of this some of my friends will ask me for recommendations on where to eat in different cities (brunch is my specialty). So I have finally stopped procrastinating and this will be first of many posts on different restaurants. I will be giving my fully honest  opinions about any place I go to. Yes, I am aware that Yelp exists, but I feel like some people still need more pictures. Anyway, here I go =)

My scale rating: 1 is the lowest & 5 is the highest;. 3 is neutral. For prices, 1 is low prices and 5 is very high.

Magnolias sous le Pont | Magnolias under the Bridge (literally)

Most of you are probably familiar with Magnolias. Almost every blogger takes pictures of their marble tables and/or posed in front of their beautiful blue exteriors. Even though I did not capture the inside as well as I would’ve liked, this place is very spacious and cozy. It is the type of café you would go to so you can read or actually get work done.  As I’ve mentioned before, I hate coffee. I’ve tried and tried again, but I cannot understand how anyone enjoys that stuff. So, I cannot truly say myself how great their coffee is, but my friends and former roommates are in love with it, mostly the lavender one. As far as everything else, I really like Magnolias. I wish the parking was a bit better, but it depends on the time of day you go and which day you go. The only parking is parallel in front of the café and then a little down the street. It is free, so I’m not complaining (paying for parking a pet peeve of mine).

Houndstooth Coffee

Houndstooth is another coffee shop that gets a lot of buzz on IG… well at least the wall mural does (which is actually not painted on the building). This is the location on Henderson, but they recently opened a location in Sylvan Thirty. I would not go here to work, this is where I usually have meetings with people or just hang out. The seating isn’t the comfiest, but the atmosphere is chill. The baristas are SUPER nice. I often use their bathrooms to change in during my shoots ha ha (I will write a post about the not so glamorous side of blogging soon). Anyway, the only reason I give the cuisine a low rating is because the baked goods are just like any baked goods you can purchase at a store like Kroger and then they don’t have a great selection of teas. I don’t always drink tea, but when I go here, I just get the blueberry iced tea (I prefer fruity teas).

Halcyon | calm; peaceful; tranquill

Halcyon just opened in Dallas; there is another location in Austin. I like the place and the baristas are pretty nice. Side note, they have a full bar here. I don’t drink, but I think it’s cool that they mix the two together. I am unaware of other places that do this, so I think it’s cool ha ha. Anyway, what most people come here for is the s’mores. You really only pay for the experience (and/or the pictures). The price they charge for the s’mores is asinine, because for the same price you can make 50 s’mores at home. But it’s cute, so yeah. The only problem I have with this place is the parking situation. You don’t have to pay for it, but when I went with my friend, we were told that we both had to purchase something that cost more than $7 and show the receipt to the “parking patrol.” This was confusing because we rode in the same car, so maybe the lady who told us that thought that we came separately, but idk. If not, it is ridiculous to pay $14 to park.

Café Victoria

I don’t have too much to say about this place, I just think it’s super cute. They also have nice staff. It is small though, the pictures you may see of it are kinda deceiving.

Bird Bakery

I love this bakery! It is seriously like me in a bakery. Everything is super cute and they really put thought and detail into all their decor. Fun fact: Armie Hammer (Serena’s hot short-time beau from Gossip Girl) and his wife are the owners. Now, even though I do love this place, it is located in Highland Park Village. There are friendly people in this area, but you can easily feel like you stand out if you do not live in the bubble that is HP/UP. I am not judging the people there, but some of you might know what I mean. With that said, this is a place I go to just to catch up with someone or just to pick up a few cupcakes. They have A LOT to choose from here and I haven’t tasted everything, but what I have tasted has been worth every dime.

Local Press + Brew

I’ve only been here once and when I went, I had just eaten a crepe, so I did not get to try the juices or pastries. The only reason I wanted to include it is because it is super cute and the baristas are SUPER nice! Like they are very kind and chill. I went with my friend Nicole when they were about to close and they just let us stay around until they were literally about to lock up. They also gave us free baked goods =) like an entire bag full. I understand that this is typical for cafés to do this, but for a first-time visit, I was pleased. My friend really likes their drinks though and the baked goods were yummy, so that is my reasoning for their ratings.

Bisous Bisous Pâtisserie

If you’re looking for amazing French baked goods, look no further. I am not a huge fan of macrons, but they do have a great assortment. What I love about this bakery is everything else. There is seriously such a wide assortment of goodies and I wish I could just eat them all without developing a major headache. The staff here are also very very nice! The place is smaller, so the only seating is outside. Also, it is kind of in a hidden place in uptown and the parking can be scarce depending on the time of day you go. But overall, if you’re wanting to pick up treats for someone or just because, I highly recommend Bisous Bisous.
